Air Wing

The Scottish Ambulance Air Wing is the only integrated, publicly funded air ambulance service in the UK and is operates a world class service for the people of Scotland.

The air ambulance service is delivered by four aircraft that have been purpose built to meet the specifications laid down by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Two Eurocopter EC135 helicopters operate from Glasgow and Inverness, responding to emergencies and planned transfers.

Two King Air 200C fixed wing aircraft operate from Aberdeen and Glasgow, dealing with requests from medical staff for planned patient transfers.

The four air ambulance aircraft are operated by Gama Aviation and supported by a medically fitted Super Puma Search and Rescue helicopter based in Shetland. In times of severe weather, additional contingency support arrangements from the Ministry of Defence and Coastguard aircraft can also be called upon.

The Air Wing flies approximately 3000 missions every year.
